“While overall freight traffic continued to decline due to the disruption of shipments from belligerents Russia and Belarus, as well as the widening spectrum of sanctions aimed at cutting raw materials to the war machine, and our increased scrutiny, we are seeing the efforts to make rail the backbone of the transport system bearing fruit. We are increasing the volume of internal transportations, the number of project transportations is increasing, we transport on new international routes – for example, for the first time in the history of LTG Cargo, a train transported cargo from Bugeni in Lithuania to Valga in Estonia,” says Eglė Šimė, General Director of LTG Cargo.

For comparison, in 2023 7 million were transported within the country in the first half of the year. t and it accounted for 53.4 percent. of all transports, and compared to 2022 during the same period, domestic transportation increased by as much as a fifth. The growth of transports in Lithuania was mostly determined by increased transports of building materials, which partially compensated for the drop in the transport of chemical and mineral fertilizers, as well as the growing volume of grain transports by rail.
During 2024 in the first half of the year, the volume of project transportation grew significantly: 94 military equipment were transported by railway both on the broad gauge and European gauge network. For comparison, during all of 2023 145 trains were transported.
Having won the international competition announced by the company “Orlen Lietuva”, which manages the oil refinery in Mažeikiai, in March, “LTG Cargo” started regular transportation services through all three Baltic states on the route Bugeniai (Lithuania) – Valga (Estonia). These transportations are carried out only at the capacity of “LTG Cargo” – all logistical solutions for the route are provided by “LTG Cargo” independently. This became a significant development event not only for the company, but also for the logistics system of the entire Baltic region.
This year, LTG Cargo, for the first time without railway partners from other countries, transported NATO military equipment from Valga in Estonia to Trakiski station on the Polish border.
In order to meet the needs of customers, acquisitions of new rolling stock and optimization of the existing rolling stock are carried out. During the first half of this year, purchases of 500 wagons intended for grain, 200 semi-wagons intended for bulk and other weather-resistant cargoes were carried out, and the purchase of electric locomotives continued.
