Mars launches groundbreaking project
Mars, the manufacturer of world-renowned brands such as SNICKERS®, TWIX®, EXTRA®, M&M’S®, KIND®, Ben’s Original™, PEDIGREE® and WHISKAS®, has launched a groundbreaking project in Germany together with Rigterink Logistics Group, Shippeo and Elain. The initiative aims to obtain even more accurate transport movement data to help further reduce the company’s carbon footprint.
The partnership initially provides enhanced transparency and information on Mars’ Scope 3 emissions from logistics for national transport in Germany. Detailed analyses will also be used to identify and implement potential improvements. This step is part of Mars, Incorporated’s global commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050 1 . The globally operating family company also aims to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions along the value chain (Scope 1 – 3) by 50% worldwide by 2030. The active, gradual decarbonization of logistics plays a key role in this.
Shippeo and Elain, a Scania venture, automate the traditionally manual process of data collection and calculation in logistics, enabling precise visualization of emissions per order, recipient and logistics company – be it full or partial loads. By combining real-time transport data from Shippeo, Rigterink’s primary fleet data (including vehicle type, route and total load) and specific fuel type data from the fuel provider, the Elain platform can take the next step to provide precise emissions for partial loads, further improving the accuracy of the data provided by Shippeo’s Carbon Visibility solution.
Thanks to this innovative partnership, Mars can now report carbon emissions for every transport movement in Germany even more accurately. This optimized approach ensures exceptional precision in measuring fuel consumption and forms the basis for a highly accurate calculation of emissions. The integration of primary data sharpens the calculations of CO2 emissions, simplifies internal reporting and enables Mars Germany to share sustainability data more consciously and quantify its commitment to environmental protection. Future collaborations with suppliers and trading partners are focused on developing further solutions with the aim of reducing the ecological footprint of the transport sector.
Björn Schlenker , Supply Chain Director at Mars Germany, emphasizes: “The ongoing innovation in the handling of primary data on CO2 emissions positions Mars as a driving force in the sustainability efforts of the logistics industry. By working with Shippeo and Elain, we gain valuable insights from our entire logistics in Germany to optimize our processes and reduce our transport operations.”
Anand Medepalli , Chief Product Officer at Shippeo, adds: “The ability to integrate extensive primary data with our Carbon Visibility solution offers our customers unprecedented accuracy and reliability in monitoring emissions. The combined expertise of us and our partners will enable Mars in Germany to achieve significant levels of transparency and pave the way for a more sustainable future in the logistics sector. We look forward to working with our partners on this groundbreaking initiative.”
Viet-Anh Pitaval , Head of Business at Elain, comments: “The partnership with Mars Germany, Rigterink and Shippeo is an important step to use data for greater sustainability in logistics. At Elain, we are committed to providing accurate emissions data so that informed decisions can be made to reduce the carbon footprint. This collaboration shows how innovative technologies can create transparency and promote a greener future. In the future, we plan to further improve our predictions and analytics to increase efficiency and sustainability in logistics.”
